You Don’t Need More How-To Advice — You Need a Beautiful and Painful Reckoning - Tim Erriss

Blog post from Tim Ferriss about not needing more how-to advice

People suck at following advice. Even the most effective people in the world are often terrible. There are at least two reasons:

1. Most people have an insufficient reason for action. The pain isn’t painful enough. It’s a nice-to-have, not a must-have. There has been no “Harajuku Moment.”

2. There are no reminders. No consistent tracking = no awareness = no behavioral change. Consistent tracking, even if you have no knowledge of fat-loss or exercise, will often beat advice from world-class trainers.

Love is the only thing we take with us when we die

One of verses from Photograph by Ed Sheeran

Loving can heal, loving can mend your soul
And it's the only thing that I know, know
I swear it will get easier
Remember that with every piece of ya
Hmm, and it's the only thing we take with us when we die

The Cover by Boyce Avenue has fantastic vocals by the lead singer and Bea Miller capture the feeling, emotion, and pain of this song so well.

Fountain, Colorado versus Bozeman, MT

Fountain, Colorado is about half the population of the main area of Bozeman.

  • Half the population of Bozeman (and Bozeman is the fastest growing and one of the most expensive cities in Montana).
  • Half the snowfall of Bozeman (if you hate driving on snow and ice, winter is more mild here)
  • 248 sunny days vs. 188 in Bozeman
  • 7.4 comfort index vs. 6.5 for Bozeman
  • Fountain is about 1,000 feet higher than central Bozeman.
  • The median income in Fountain is about $10,000 higher, coupled with average home prices that are significantly cheaper than Bozeman's inflated prices since 2019-2021.

Extra bonuses for a millennial who wants access to amenities:

Only 20 minutes to downtown Colorado Springs

Target - 16 mins away

Trader Joe's - 28 mins away

Whole Foods - 32 mins away

Apple Store - 32 mins away

Costco - about 31 mins away

There are two Starbucks on the north side of Fountain.

Researching Why Some People Don't Like Jordan Peterson

After stumbling on a March 2021 interview where Tim Ferriss had Jordan Peterson on his show, I was trying to understand why I've heard a few of my friends say they hate the guy so much.

Articles that critique Peterson's viewpoints:

Jordan Peterson’s Flimsy Philosophy of Life - Psychology Today column
Great article critiquing that you can't draw morality from religion, as Plato pointed out.

Moral behavior in a social context demands adjudicating between the rights of individuals and the pressures of groups and organizations such as families and nations.

"The deeper issue here is the general question of limitations on free speech. Since the nineteenth century, law and society have recognized that one person’s freedom ends where another’s freedom begins. You do not have the freedom to infringe someone else’s human rights by harassing, threatening, or discriminating against them."

The major sources of good experiences are love, work, and play, so I would rather identify these as the meaning of life than suffering. These three activities feed directly into satisfying basic psychological needs for relatedness, competence and autonomy, as I argue in my book on The Brain and the Meaning of Life.

How dangerous is Jordan B Peterson, the rightwing professor who 'hit a hornets' nest'? - The Guardian

Jordan Peterson, the obscure Canadian psychologist turned right-wing celebrity, explained - Vox

Why Can't People Hear What Jordan Peterson Is Saying? - The Atlantic

Why do people hate Jordan Peterson - Reddit discussion

He had some progressive ideas on his show, including that psychedelics (particularly magic mushrooms) for some people created a new level of openness that could happen in a person's first use of them.

One critique he had is that some people are so open that they don't really know themselves.

Steve Jobs is famous for saying that one of the most important things he did in his life was taking psychedelics (likely LSD).

The Battle Between Order and Chaos

The overarching motif of the interview was the eternal battle between order and chaos.  He mentioned the tree of life archetype that has existed for thousands of years and crosses cultural boundaries.

Between order and chaos is a connection to the heaven world.

The Concept of Conscience

Petersen also touched on the concept of conscience and how it's a mysterious and vital part of our existence. He likened conscience to the holy spirit, even though he seemed to avoid talk of religion itself being true.

Ignore your conscience for enough time and see what happens.

Categorical Respect for a Marriage Partner

If you've decided to devote your life to someone [through marriage] they deserve a certain amount of categorical respect to maintain the relationship over time.

Indicative Nature of a Home

Walking in someone's home, you can see things that are off that indicate relationship problems, including the kitchen being a mess, packages that haven't been opened two years after the wedding,

"Genuine peace is hard to obtain.  People generally obtain peace by sweeping things under the carpet."
- 21:05

Pay Attention to Your Negative Emotions

Resentment in particular. It's so informative. You find out where you're immature...who wants to find out that?

Man's Search for Meaning
23:25

This is partly why I have a certain conservative bent. People need to search for meaning because they get corrupted by suffering if their life isn't meaningful. You can't torture an animal forever without it lashing out.

Do you have an intimate relationship?
What about your family? How's that functioning? Do you have anyone there?
Do you have a job, or maybe a career?
Do you know how to use your time outside of work productively?
Do you take care of your mental and physical health?
Do you manage temptations [of drug and alcohol use] effectively?
Are you as educated as you are intelligent?
Do you have kids, or a wife, or a husband?

If you're overwhelmed by life, anxious suffering, that's a good place to start. Put that together.

28:55
[If] you want to make changes, start with what's under your control. Start with changing the things that will hurt you if the changes go wrong.

Psychopharmacology

33:00

His PhD was around alcoholism. Years of research was drug and alcohol abuse.

Alcohol is like water. It crosses the blood-brain barrier like water.b It bathes every cell.

34:50
I'm also interested in religious experiences...there are agents that reliably produce religious experiences. No one knows what in the world to do about that.

Psychedelics and the Effect on Openness

37:25
You've spoken in the changes in openness [with psychedelic use]. - Tim
Yes, they're pronounced. - Jordan

38:55
You can undo yourself by being open. People who are open have a hard time catalyzing their identity., because they're so protean, they shift shapes constantly. They're interested in everything. It makes it very hard for them to pursue one thing.

40:20
There's this constant war between the strictures of tradition and the transformation of creativity. You can't say who's right, you can just talk it out.

Major neurological rewiring by taking psilocybin.

Health and Life Purpose Starting in the Morning

8 Things Every Person Should Do Before 8 A.M. — Medium

7+ Hours of Sleep

Cold shower - stimulates feel good chemicals

Physical labor

Breakfast with 30 grams of protein (equivalent to 5 ounces of meat or 5 eggs).

Meditation/Prayer - feeling gratitude, clarity, and abundance

Consume Uplifting Content
Ordinary people seek entertainment. Extraordinary people seek education and learning. It is common for the world’s most successful people to read at least one book per week. They are constantly learning.

I can easily get through one audiobook per week by just listening during my commute to school and while walking on campus.

Taking even 15–30 minutes every morning to read uplifting and instructive information changes you. It puts you in the zone to perform at your highest.

Review Your Life Vision

Do at Least One Thing Towards Long Term Goals
You need to do the hard stuff first thing in the morning. The important stuff.

So your mantra becomes: The worst comes first. Do that thing you’ve been needing to do. Then do it again tomorrow.

After you’ve done this, no matter what you have for the rest of your day, you’ll have done the important stuff first. You’ll have put yourself in a place to succeed. You’ll have inched toward your dreams.

How to Not Be Spoiled - A Guide for Young Adults

  1. Get a job before you turn 18.  Learn the value of money early.Unless you're away at a boarding school and on the path to become a world-class musician or artist, work your first job while you're still in high school.  Working early teaches many, many lessons and will help you mature into an adult faster.  Making your own money and learning to budget is the best way to learn the value of hard work and the real value of money.
  2. Get a job right around the time you buy your first car.
Getting a job and buying your first car go hand in hand, unless you live in a place like New York City where owning a car is unnecessary because of good public transportation.
  3. Pay for at least half of your first car.
You'll be grateful that you worked hard to pay for your own car.  Because your hard work and sweat paid for it, it's a lot less likely that you'll trash it or do something foolish to damage it.  Parents, it's not horrible if you help your child out to get their first car, but at least make them pay you back for a portion of it so they learn the responsibility of making payments and earning money.
  4. Pay for your cell phone after you turn 18.
If you took the previous big steps to adulthood and got a job while still in high school, you should be able to afford your own cell phone after high school (assuming you're still working).
  5. Pay for your car insurance and registration after you have a job.
Adults have to pay for their own car expenses, so the earlier you start putting this into practice, the less of a shock it will be when the responsibility becomes yours.
  6. Pay for your own rent after you move out of the house.
Mom and Dad should not have a big financial impact in your life after you move out of the house.  The financial umbilical cord should be completely severed, unless they occasionally help you pay for small things.
  7. Pay a fair portion of rent, utilities, and food if you are living at home after age 21.
If you must live at home after age 21, take responsibility and prepare yourself for real adult life by contributing to a fair portion of the rent, utilities, and food.  You'll be better prepared for leaving the nest when you can anticipate what your monthly bills will be when you finally move out.
  8. Pay for all your living expenses after you move out of the house.
This goes hand-in-hand with #6.  If Mom and Dad are covering too many of your expenses, it will be difficult to learn how much your bills really are when you're responsible for yourself.  Be an adult and pay for all your bills!
  9. Work part-time during college
Earn enough money to cover your cell phone, some restaurant meals, gas, and car insurance.  Working will help prevent you from going into debt and will prepare you for living on your own when your parents should not be paying bills for you.

How to be a Good Roommate

A simple list of the things to do and NOT do to be a great roommate.

Things NOT TO DO:

Don't indulge in your roommate's food without asking.

Smoke pot in your room.

Criticize or question your roommates' religious beliefs or those of his/her friends. If you're in a larger group of people, it's usually safe to poke fun at Scientology and Mormonism, just know what crowd you're in before opening your mouth.

Take anything that belongs to someone else without asking. You wouldn't want anyone to do this to you, so don't do it to others.

Leave your stuff all over the bathroom. When you're done brushing your teeth, taking a dump, taking a shower, or especially shaving, make the bathroom the way it was--without hair all over the sink, piss on the toilet seat, or items scattered all over place.

Hit on your roommate's girlfriend. It's just bad news to hit on anbody's girlfriend, but it's much worse when it's

Play loud music. Unless you're half deaf or on drugs, no one likes having to listen to loud music.

Make sure you:

Shower EVERY day. (This is not negotiable, especially if you wear your clothes more than once before washing them, smoke pot, sweat heavily, or have other lifestyle habits that cause you to smell raunchy.)

Help with the cooking or the dishes. Don't be a lazy ass, do your part.

Pay the rent and utilities on time. It's an easy trust-building exercise and will help your roommates see you as reliable and dependable.

Be very discrete with any sexual habits. No one likes to hear other people screwing. If you're going to work on yourself, do it when everyone is asleep, with your door locked. You're asking for trouble if you do things when others are still awake.
