Simple, Natural Teeth Whitening in Photoshop

Lunacore Photoshop Training - Beautify a Face tutorial (part 4/7)
Their technique uses a hue/saturation adjustment layer with a mask of only the teeth (no gums, lips, etc.)  The mask is easily made by zooming in at 300-400% and using a brush with 0 hardness.
The final steps include making the teeth whitening appear natural by setting the adjustment layer opacity to 40%.  A layer opacity set much higher than this starts to look fake.

Using their steps took 10 minutes at the very most (the longest step is making the layer mask).  Once the layer mask is created, is only a matter of making minor adjustments to the

Silver Coin Values

All the silver values below are calculated assuming silver is worth $28.95/oz (as of February 3, 2011)

..silver was removed from all coinage in 1965 and 1970 (40% silver half-dollars)

Bottom line:
* Look for quarters made in 1964 or earlier, 1964 Kennedy half dollars, and Kennedy Half Dollars made from 1965-1970.

* Only a special collector's version of the Eisenhower dollar was made with 40% silver. All the rest were made with no silver at all. The silver dollar weighs 24.59 grams and the worthless version (which is mostly circulated) weighs 22.68 grams. More info on the 40% silver Eisenhower Dollar and the non-silver Eisenhower Dollar. The weight difference is only about two paperclips.

How long should a car engine warm up?

Unless it's below freezing, cars don't need to be warmed up at all. Driving them gently is the best warm up there is. If it's 25 degrees out, you might want to let it warm up for 30 seconds. If it's 10 degrees out, warm it up for a minute. If it's -10 degrees out, move somewhere warmer.

via: Car Talk's Guide to Better Fuel Economy

The vast majority of cars on the road today use electronic fuel injection. When your car’s engine is cold, the computer tells the fuel injectors to stay open longer, allowing more fuel into the engine to help it run cold. As the engine warms up, the injectors let in less fuel and everything returns to normal, so to speak.

The problem is, letting your car sit and idle is the slowest way to bring it up to operating temperature because it’s generally sitting in your drive at just above idle speed.

The best bet? Even when it’s 10 degrees F outside, start your car, let it run for 30 to 60 seconds to get all the fluids moving, then drive off gently. Your engine will warm up faster, your exhaust system will get up to temperature faster so the catalytic converter can do its thing, and you’ll use less fuel. Which is what you wanted all along anyhow, right?

If it's below zero outside, it would be a good idea to give the engine five minutes or a little less before you drive off into the frozen wilderness!

Ripping Prince Caspian Successfully

How to rip the Prince Caspian DVD.

Most newer Disney DVDs including Hannah Montana, WALL-E, Prince Caspian and many others have ARccOS and possibly some other form annoying copy protection.

MacTheRipper, DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter have a hard time handling the ARccOS copy protection scheme because it uses bad sectors to try and foil DVD rippers.

Tonight I initially tried to copy Prince Caspian with MacTheRipper. If no settings are changed, the application thinks that the disc is 70 GB because of the dummy sectors. This won't work at all. It will take hours for the MTR to work around the dummy sectors and most likely end up producing a VIDEO_TS folder that doesn't work anyway!

I tried the "Main Feature ARccOS extraction" option and after about 40 minutes, found out that the rip didn't work.

After heading over the MacTheRipper forum, some people had success by using the "Title Set Extraction" option and only extracting TS 10. Ripping this way will only yield the movie.

I want more than this. I want to have a DVD menu and be able to browse the chapters visually.

Thanks to This Post which said that AnyDVD for Windows worked and MTR failed, I thought I'd give it a try. This member also said that RipIt for Mac also worked, but the burn failed when Toast 9 returned an error stating that the folder was damaged. On another post, someone reported that Prince Caspian ripped successfully with DVDFab Decrypter for Windows.

AnyDVD comes to the Rescue

I got AnyDVD from the PirateBay in about 5 minutes. After firing up Parallels 3 for Mac, I installed AnyDVD on my virtual Windows XP system. It prompted me to uninstall DVD43 because it said there was a serious conflict, probably because both of them are software drivers that work with the DVD data directly. The prompt provided an option to uninstall DVD43, so I accepted the uninstall.

After inserting the Prince Caspian disc, AnyDVD took about 1 minute to do its magic scanning the disc to analyze the copy protection.

I fired up DVD Shrink, opened the disc, and removed all the extra languages and half a dozen or so previews that Disney stuffed on the disc. I got the movie quality up to about 70% after all the unnecessary stuff was removed.

34 minutes later and I had a working, compressed DVD ISO of Prince Caspian; with no fiddling around with settings in MacTheRipper. ( I have a MacBook Pro with a 8x DVD Burner, so your computer will probably be able to rip the disc faster if you have a desktop.)

Miscellaneous tax stuff

Business and Personal Expenses Don't Mix - Financial Web
"Perhaps it started out as just a way to spend a few weekends each month doing something that you like to do, and make a few bucks at it to boot. You probably never bothered to give much thought to organizing, much less turning things into a permanent enterprise. And, as such, all of the money you made from your little diversion simply went into your personal account. But then, things actually began to pick up and soon you were making money hand-over-fist. Here's where the fun begins, because the IRS now categorizes you as "self-employed" for tax purposes, and because your sideline occupation is pulling in more than $400 of profit a year, you have to pay taxes on it. Your single personal checking account is now going to make things more confusing for both you and your accountant."

You must file a Schedule SE (self-employment) if:
You had net earnings from self-employment from other than church employee income (line 4 of Short Schedule SE or line 4c of
Long Schedule SE) of $400 or more

In the USA, a sole proprietorship just means you add two new pages to your annual tax return. That would be a Schedule C to show your income and expenses, and a Schedule SE to figure your self-employment tax.

The official definition of a deductible expense according to IRS is that “a business expense must be both ordinary and necessary.” An ordinary expense is defined as one that is “common and accepted in your trade or business.” A necessary expense is defined as one that is “helpful and appropriate for your trade or business.”

High Income Means a Higher Audit Risk
"The fact is," former IRS Commissioner Charles O. Rossotti once said, "people who make more than $100,000 pay more than 60% of the taxes, and we need to focus there."
If you're making more than $100,000 a year, your risk of an audit is higher. That means it's even more important to keep adequate records to substantiate your deductions.

Recent IRS statistics show a substantial decrease in the percentage of returns audited. Only 1.03% of all returns filed were audited in fiscal 2007. That's more than the 0.98% audited in 2006, but well below the 1.67% audited as recently as 1996. It's simply a question of money and resource allocation. Between 1996 and 2005, the number of tax returns filed jumped from 158 million to 177 million. During the same period, the number of IRS employees declined from 114,000 to 94,000.

Recording Tapes with Audacity

Transferring tapes and records to computer or CD - Audacity Wiki

You can also connect to the headphones out jack of an integrated cassette deck or to that of an amplifier connected to the tape deck. If you do this (or if the "line-out" volume of your deck is adjustable), it's best to set that level quite close to its maximum, and adjust the recording level using Audacity's input volume slider (see below). This helps keep the inherent tape noise to a minimum in the signal sent to Audacity.

* Set the Correct input source settings
* Adjust volume level on the tape deck to be close to the maximum
* Adjust Audacity's recording level
* Set recording to 2 Channels (Aduio I/O tab of preferences)
On Windows XP or earlier or Linux systems, select line-in as the recording source on Audacity's Mixer Toolbar dropdown input selector:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/onlinehelp-1.2/toolbar_mixer.htm .

When recording, stay on the same track by using the pause button.

Fumblerules

Fumblerules are humorous rules for writing, collected from teachers of English grammar.[1] A fumblerule contains an example contrary to the advice it gives, such as "don't use no double negatives" and "eschew obfuscation".

Avoid run-on sentences they are hard to read.
Reserve the apostrophe for it's proper use and omit it when its not needed.
Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.
Avoid commas, that are not necessary.
If you reread your work, you will find on rereading that a great deal of repetition can be avoided by rereading and editing.
And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.
Don't overuse exclamation marks!!!
Take the bull by the hand and avoid mixed metaphors.
Last but not least, avoid clichés like the plague; seek viable alternatives.
Don't abbrev.
In the case of a report, check to see that jargonwise, it's A-OK.
Avoid incorrect terms that have snuck into common usage.
Contractions aren't necessary and shouldn't be used.

Snuck is an Americanism first introduced in the 19th century as a nonstandard regional variant of sneaked. Widespread use of snuck has become more common with every generation. It is now used by educated speakers in all regions. Formal written English is more conservative than other varieties, of course, and here snuck still meets with much resistance.
