The Best BookZZ Alternatives - What to Use After BookZZ has disappeared

RIP BookZZ, you helped many netizens find Kindle, PDF, and iPad format books to read without having to rely on a limited selection from the local library.

Library Genesis libgen.lc
While the interface is about as exciting as a search engine circa 1997, the search does have several options to hone in on the exact book you're look for.  The search results pages also show the format and size of the book, saving valuable time when you only want books in a preferred format, like mobi for Kindle.

Search tricks, like combining one keyword from the title and the author's last name can provide very accurate search results.  The example below was to find the book "The Art of Creative Thinking" by John Adair.  Other searches with just keywords from the title created a huge pile of irrelevant search results that too broadly matched the keywords.

Z Library https://b-ok.cc
The interface of Z Library is nearly identical to the late BookZZ website.  The homepage features a visual splash with the most popular book downloads.

The Single book page on Z Library includes the cover image, publication year, edition (important for academic and college books), the book file format, and book file size.

The download menu provides multiple native options for many books, like PDF, Mobie (Kindle), or ePub (iPad).  There's also an integrated conversion menu if you need the book in a different format.

Book recommendation engine seems to be pretty smart.  These were books recommended while viewing the "5am Club" book by

The Folk Station on Grooveshark is Fantastic

I checked out the Grooveshark Folk station a few days ago and it was excellent.

Out of about seven or eight songs, I liked four of them enough to add them to my music library. Most of my Pandora stations, even the ones based on my favorite songs, only occasionally helped me find new music that I enjoyed.

Here are the five songs I liked:

"Be Good or Be Gone"
Fionn Regan

"Big Yellow Taxi"
Joni Mitchell

"Vernonia Blues"
Horse Feathers

"Black River Killer"
Blitzen Trapper

"Failure"
Laura Manning

Similar to Pandora, Grooveshark gives you the opportunity to help it choose songs for you by giving each song a happy face or sad face (compare to Pandora's thumb up or thumb down).

Logonerds - Logos for under $100

I stumbled upon the Logonerds.com website a few days ago and I couldn't believe that they offer logos for under $100. A professionally designed logo for $47. It almost sounds too good to be true. I would almost pay that just to try it out. Other online logo services charge around $200 for logo packages.

According to Logo Reviews, they are based out of Canada. Maybe this is how they keep their costs down. Even a decent professionally designed logo would be worth well over $47. As of 3/16/10, they do not provide a phone number on their website.

Here are some examples from their online portfolio:

Saturday: Typepad pricing, Rechargeable batteries

Rechargable Battery Performance
I just bought a bunch of Rayovac rechargeable batteries and wanted to read up on their performance before opening the packaging. Consumer Reports has their rechargable battery test ratings.

Typepad for my future wedding website
After I finish my degree, I'm going to start wedding website as business project and create a website using Typepad, because their pages are easy to edit. Here's Typepad pricing page. The pro plan is $15/month and includes the "total design customization". The plus plan for $9/month does not include the design customization. This a must-have because I would have a modified index template, and not show any blog style entries on the homepage. The pro plan essentially has everything I would need to get the site up and running quickly.

I also read up on Movable Type, and this would be better for a large scale site, since it's an entire CMS system with some incredible features. Movable Type would not be best for the wedding site because it's a platform that runs on your server. Moveable Type Pro is available free for "power bloggers" and the business license is $400. If I ever create a website geared to make it big, I would definitely use Movable Type. Here are the installation instructions for Linux/Unix. It looks like it will work with 1and1. This blogger gives some pointers (from 2003) on how to install MT using 1and1. He gave me hope.

. . .designed for bloggers, design and development firms, and small and medium-sized businesses, and has all of the features of Movable Type plus social networking features, custom fields for extending your content management system, and new Professional Templates that help you get up and running with a beautiful website quickly.
