Things for the Interview

With an interview coming up this week, a friend who has worked for the company for many years said I should be prepared for these questions:

What are some of your weaknesses?
Time management
Becoming too focused on one aspect of a project

What are some of your hobbies?
Learning piano
Writing
Web design
Film production
Spanish & German

How do you work in a team or with others?
I thrive working with others, especially on collaborative projects.

What are your career goals?
(They don't want everything to be about you.)
Working in a solid position where I can learn, grow, and contribute ideas.
Also be in involved in a leadership position.

-----

What can you bring to our company?

Assessments Galore

Some companies use a series of computer-based assessments to help narrow down the pool of job candidates.

Today, I took several assessments in 90 minutes that measured my reasoning ability, typing speed, general knowledge of working with computer files, and technical design test.

The position I am applying for is a highly technical position in the online printing industry that requires attention to detail, very strong technical ability, and a sharp individual.

Cognitive test

This test had questions like:
Do the words: ILLUSTRIOUS and ILLUSTRATE
a) have a similar meaning
b) have an opposite meaning
c) have neither similar nor opposite meanings

Simple math questions like, which is the smallest number:
3, 1, 0.7, 0.77 1.77

Some of the hardest questions were pairs of numbers and names that looked very similar, but almost every set was not identical, so it took more time to mentally process the right answer.

The cognitive test was 50 questions and I was told beforehand that people do not finish all 50 questions in the allotted 20 minutes. The questions got progressively more difficult, and at the end I had finished about 30 questions.

Typing Test

The typing test was taken on TypingTest.com
The Aesop's Fables option actually made the test pretty easy.
50 WPM with about 2-3 errors.

Personality assessment

Many "most like you" and "least like you" choices with number scales
for the other options. Some of the questions seemed very repetitive, maybe to gauge honest responses, and some of the pairs of descriptive words did not really seem to match up.

PC Basic Skills test

This included things such as:
- Making a folder on the desktop and renaming it
- Retrieving information from the web and putting it into a word processor
- Copying a file to a network location

PC Technical Test

I was shown a printed design created with Microsoft Visio and had to replicate the design to the best of my ability. I have never used Microsoft Visio before, but thanks to years of working with other Microsoft applications, it was pretty easy. I'm not sure how long it took me. It was probably no more than 20 minutes, but it felt like an eternity when I couldn't find a couple of the options that I needed.

Thrift Store Shirt Raid

Today I stopped by a thrift store and got four button down shirts (3 long sleeve and one short) and two sweaters, all for $18! Just one of these would have been on sale for $25 and the Kenneth Cole shirt looks to be $50!

Dockers Solid Textured Polo Sweater
sale $25.20
original $42.00

Kenneth Cole Reaction Men's Spread Collar Tonal Solid Woven Shirt
- Blue Topaz version above is probably what I got
- $50 on Amazon

The Banana Republic shirt could be one of these:
Banana Republic Slim fit stretch-poplin yarn-dyed solid dress shirt
Banana Republic Royal oxford shirt: french cuff dress shirts | Banana Republic
Banana Republic Classic fit non-iron shirt: button cuff dress shirts | Banana Republic
- probably not this one, because it's one in the new "Non-iron Shirt Collection"

Stafford Essentials Oxford
Sale $15
Original $36

High School Memories

Entertainment

Andy Richter Controls the Universe Wondering how many people ever saw this show, as it was only on for two seasons. It was so much more genuinely hilarious that most other TV shows on at the time.

Undeclared A cool show about college. Created by Judd Apatow, who was almost unknown at the time. Sadly only ran for one season. Seth Rogen played one of the lead characters.

That 70's Show Yes, it has a laugh track, but was one of the shows that people 15-55 could appreciate.

24 When the first season aired during my freshman year of high school, I had to watch it every Tuesday night. If I couldn't watch it, then I tried to tape it.

Covering books

Last week I helped my brother cover a book for high school. It was a strange feeling, doing something I haven't done in about five years. Here are some photos from a tutorial on the web.

Money Well Spent: What was worth buying

Looking back on products and purchases that were worth the money
  • 8B CompactFlash card I photographed an entire wedding in RAW with one of these cards. I took only about 600 images, however.
  • Soundslides For $70 I can now make professional looking flash galleries for my website, show images portfolio and tell stories on my blog.
  • Mead Five Star Folders These folders are incredibly tough and come in several colors.
  • MetaFilter (registration) Good answers to questions about anything
  • Mead Five Star: 3/5 Subject Notebooks An entire semester's worth of college notes was stored in one of these notebooks, which made notes easier to access
  • MacHeist Bundle (1Password) 1Password has made this entire package worth the purchase. Using Snapz Pro X or CSSEdit would really make this a valuable purchase.
