Sleep problems associated with ADHD

Associations of sleep disturbance with ADHD: implications for treatment

The most recent meta-analysis of subjective studies found that ADHD was associated with statistically significant greater impairments in six parent-reported subjective measures of sleep in children than in controls (Cortese et al. 2009). The largest standardized mean difference was observed for bedtime resistance, followed by difficulty with morning awakenings, sleep onset difficulties, sleep-disordered breathing, night awakenings and daytime sleepiness.

Other sleep problems reportedly associated with ADHD in children and/or adults include early and middle insomnia, nocturnal awakening, nocturnal activity, snoring, breathing difficulties, restless sleep, parasomnias, nightmares, daytime sleepiness, delayed sleep phase, short sleep time and anxiety around bedtime.

Low Ferritin (Iron Stores) and High Iron (Hemochromatosis)

On average, a hair will grow for 5 years before falling out and being replaced. If we do not have sufficient stored iron, the duration for which an individual hair grows will be reduced.
source:
Ferritin & Hair Health Healthy Hair & Scalp products by Philip Kingsley, the 'hair doctor'

Menstruating women are at the highest risk for iron deficiency because they are losing iron through their monthly cycles.  Men (and people with the genetic variant for hemachromatosis)

The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia is 2 percent in adult men, 9 to 12 percent in non-Hispanic white women, and nearly 20 percent in black and Mexican-American women. Nine percent of patients older than 65 years with iron deficiency anemia have a gastrointestinal cancer when evaluated.

Why female vegans and vegetarians need to be taking iron supplements (opinion)
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. It can cause reduced work capacity in adults and impact motor and mental development in children and adolescents. There is some evidence that iron deficiency without anemia affects cognition in adolescent girls and causes fatigue in adult women. IDA may affect visual and auditory functioning and is weakly associated with poor cognitive development in children.

Blood donors lose iron; 20 mg per day replaces lost iron with minimal constipation or gastroesophageal reflux disease; vitamin C potentiates iron absorption.

Iron metabolism is unusual in that it is controlled by absorption rather than excretion. Iron is only lost through blood loss or loss of cells as they slough. Men and nonmenstruating women lose about 1 mg of iron per day. Menstruating women lose from 0.6 to 2.5 percent more per day. An average 132-lb (60-kg) woman might lose an extra 10 mg of iron per menstruation cycle, but the loss could be more than 42 mg per cycle depending on how heavily she menstruates.7 A pregnancy takes about 700 mg of iron, and a whole blood donation of 500 cc contains 250 mg of iron.

Ordinary people seek entertainment. Extraordinary people seek education and learning. It is common for the world’s most successful people to read at least one book per week. They are constantly learning.

I can easily get through one audiobook per week by just listening during my commute to school and while walking on campus.

Taking even 15–30 minutes every morning to read uplifting and instructive information changes you. It puts you in the zone to perform at your highest.

You need to do the hard stuff first thing in the morning. The important stuff.

So your mantra becomes: The worst comes first. Do that thing you’ve been needing to do. Then do it again tomorrow.

After you’ve done this, no matter what you have for the rest of your day, you’ll have done the important stuff first. You’ll have put yourself in a place to succeed. You’ll have inched toward your dreams.

Why Subway Food is Unhealthy - the Artificial Ingredients and Nasty Ingredients You Weren't Supposed to Know About

Health author Michael Pollan said it best in his recent book "Food Rules", don't eat food you see advertised on TV.  Why?  Because big, corporately-owned food companies can spend millions of dollars to advertise their food products on TV. They use their deep pocketbooks and marketing sharks to convince you that their food is healthy. Think about all the junk food chains that you see advertised on TV: McDonald's, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Burger King, Domino's, and many more.  Subway food is also junk food, unless you fill your plastic bowl with veggies only.

The most important reasons why Subway food is fake health food:
  1. Artificial ingredients (chemicals) - One of their best tasting breads, the Italian Herbs and Cheese, contains artificial flavor, which means they are putting chemicals in the food to trick your brain into thinking it is experiencing a flavor.  Artificial color is also added, when there are so many other ways to color things naturally!
  2. Preservatives.  Their bacon slices and genoa salami contain nitrates, a preservative that is not used in health food. Essentially all of their meats contain preservatives.  They also add sugar to the bacon so your taste buds will think it tastes better!
  3. Cheap, processed meat.  Cheap meat comes at a big price to health.  Chickens and cows are given hormones and antibiotics to extend their life.  Those substances stay in the meat and we consume those toxins when we choose to eat mass-market meat.
  4. Lack of Inherent Nutrients. "...775 foods advertised on TV contained inadequate amounts of 12 essential nutrients — such as calcium, potassium, fiber, vitamins D and E, and magnesium (Time Magazine article from 2010)
  5. GMOs - Their breads contain corn and soybean oil.  Corn and soybeans are the most genetically modified crops in the United States.  The United States has the 6th highest cancer rate in the world, primarily because people eat bad food, and some of this may be attributed to GMO's.
  6. Microwaved food.  Most hot items at Subway are microwaved, which destroys some of limited nutrients that were already there to begin with.
  7. Carb overload. Some people's bodies cannot handle excessive amounts of carbs, especially people with Diabetes, blood sugar issues, and some people with auto-immune disorders.
  8. Lack of good fats.  Unless they start slathering their foot-longs with coconut oil or flax oil, their sub sandwiches are seriously lacking good fats.
Hopefully that is enough food for thought.   See Subway's official ingredients list here.

Testosterone and Estrogen levels Affect the Whole Body and the Brain

Research articles showing how Testosterone and Estrogen (Estradiol) cause different brain chemistry/function between men and women.

Clinical research has demonstrated a significant sex difference in the occurrence of depressive disorders. Beginning at pubertal onset, women report a higher incidence of depression than men. Women are also vulnerable to the development of depressive disorders such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder, postpartum depression, and perimenopausal depression. These disorders are associated with reproductive stages involving changes in gonadal hormone levels. Specifically, female depression and female affective behaviors are influenced by estradiol levels.

The literature suggests that while there are many similarities in brain structure, function, and neurotransmission in healthy men and women, there are important differences that distinguish the male from the female brain.
Evolving knowledge of sex differences in bra... [Biol Psychiatry. 2007] - PubMed - NCBI

Of particular interest are sex differences that have been identified in the brain. Although the brains of men and women are highly similar, they show consistent differences that have important implications for each sex. That is, brain sex differences uniquely affect biochemical processes, may contribute to the susceptibility to specific diseases, and may influence specific behaviors. Such biological differences should never be used to justify discrimination or sexism. However, we believe that a thorough understanding of these differences can inform researchers and clinicians so that they can better address important issues. Two examples include how genetic sex can lead to differences between the sexes in the etiology and the progression of disease and how differences in neural development may result in differences in cognition and behavior.
The Genetics of Sex Differences in Brain and Behavior

"...sociologist J. Richard Urdy has found that females' responsiveness to encouragement of femininity is inversely related to their mothers' testosterone levels during the second trimester of pregnancy.

"...female rhesus money injected with androgens during the prenatal critical perioid later display stereotypic male sexual and nonsexual behavior.  They engage in higher frequencies of threat behavior, play initiation, rough-and-tumble play, and chasing play...a consistent relationship between hormones and behavior emerges that is not easy to dismiss by invoking different ad hoc criticisms of the individual findings.
Book: Biology at Work: Rethinking Sexual Equality

The incidence of psychopathy in the general population is generally considered to be 0·6-4% with a higher proportion of males to females. Brain imaging studies of psychopaths suggest a smaller and less active amygdala and prefrontal cortex. There also appear to be physiological derangements in psychopathy, including alterations/dysregulation in neurotransmitter homeostasis (dopamine and serotonin), altered endocrine responses (testosterone and cortisol)

The recognition memory tasks, novel object and novel object location, have been beneficial to neuroendocrine research concerning the effects of gonadal and adrenal hormones on cognitive function...Experiments conducted across a number of laboratories show that gonadal hormones, both estradiol and testosterone, promote memory while the adrenal hormone, corticosterone, impairs memory.

The gonadal steroids play an important role in altering the survival or death of neurons within the brain as well regulating the development of neuronal processes (such as the number and length of dendrites and dendritic spines, or the degree of axonal branching). In this regard, we can say that steroid hormones have organizational effects that produce sex differences in the connections and functions of the brain. Gonadal steroids also have activational effects; these activational effects are transient and are thought to coordinate behavior with either an internal event, such as ovulation, or an external event, such as the presence of a sexual partner.

The specific impact of sex hormones on brain development and acoustic communication is known from animal models. Sex steroid hormones secreted during early development play an essential role in hemispheric organization and the functional lateralization of the brain, e.g. language. In animals, these hormones are well-known regulators of vocal motor behaviour.

Boys with higher levels of prenatal testosterone who were also exposed to higher levels of nicotine and alcohol during pregnancy exhibited increased hyperactivity-impulsivity during early childhood, but girls did not exhibit this same pattern. Thus, high prenatal testosterone exposure seems to increase risk for DBD symptoms particularly in males by increasing susceptibility to prenatal environmental stressors.

Genistein is a phytoestrogen, particularly abundant in soybeans, that is able to bind estrogen receptors exerting both estrogenic and antiestrogenic activities. Genistein is largely present in the human diet even during pregnancy. Embryos and fetuses are therefore, commonly exposed to genistein during the development and after birth. In the present study, we used a murine model as a test end-point to investigate the effects of early exposure to genistein on adult male behavior and related neural circuits. Exposure of dams to genistein (100μg/g of body weight) daily during late pregnancy and early lactation, produced in male offspring, when adults, significant changes in anxiety behavior and statistically significant variations in the number of neuronal nitric-oxide synthase positive cells in the amygdala. In conclusions, these data indicate that early exposure to phytoestrogens may induce life-long effects on the differentiation of brain structures and behaviors.

HSA Funds Cannot Be Used for Teeth Whitening

"You cannot include in medical expenses amounts paid to
whiten teeth."
(page 16)

Also, over the counter medicines like Aspirin or Tylenol that are not perscribed by a doctor are not considered qualified medical expenses to withdraw from an HSA.

"Except for insulin, you cannot include in medical expenses amounts you pay for a drug that is not prescribed.

Example. Your doctor recommends that you take aspirin. Because aspirin is a drug that does not require a physician’s prescription, you cannot include its cost in your medical expenses. "

Five Easy Ways to Go Organic

Some "strategic" organic foods. Excerpted from the October 22, 2007 article by Tara Parker-Pope.

1. Milk
One recent United States Department of Agriculture survey found certain pesticides in about 30 percent of conventional milk samples and low levels in only one organic sample. The level is relatively low compared to some other foods, but many kids consume milk in large quantities.
(Commercials cows are given antibiotics and artificial hormones that make it into the milk.)

2. Potatoes
. . .commercially-farmed potatoes are some of the most pesticide-contaminated vegetables. A 2006 U.S.D.A. test found 81 percent of potatoes tested still contained pesticides after being washed and peeled, and the potato has one of the the highest pesticide contents of 43 fruits and vegetables tested, according to the Environmental Working Group.

3. Peanut Butter
More acres are devoted to growing peanuts than any other fruits, vegetable or nut, according to the U.S.D.A. More than 99 percent of peanut farms use conventional farming practices, including the use of fungicide to treat mold, a common problem in peanut crops.

4. Ketchup
. . .recent research has shown organic ketchup has about double the antioxidants of conventional ketchup.

5. Apples
Apples are the second most commonly eaten fresh fruit, after bananas. . .But apples are also one of the most pesticide-contaminated fruits

Cancer immunity and viruses

Excerpts from this article, written by a radio-oncologist
IS CANCER CAUSED BY VIRUS?

Under microscope, Rife observed conversion was due to accumulated toxins and waste products in the cells in different parts of body. He came to the conclusion that exposure to carcinogens slowly alters the constitution and makes body ready for cancer. BX viruses then grow within the body and invade the cells to cause cancer.

According to Dr. John Cairns of Harvard University School of Public Health, chemotherapy is curative only in 2% to 3% of all cancer patients although it is routinely given to more than 50% cancer patients in America.

Eating Kosher: mystical and healthy

Judaism 101: Kashrut: Jewish Dietary Laws

The Torah prohibits consumption of blood. Lev. 7:26-27; Lev. 17:10-14. This is the only dietary law that has a reason specified in Torah: we do not eat blood because the life of the animal (literally, the soul of the animal) is contained in the blood. This applies only to the blood of birds and mammals, not to fish blood. Thus, it is necessary to remove all blood from the flesh of kosher animals.

Of the things that are in the waters, you may eat anything that has fins and scales. Lev. 11:9; Deut. 14:9. Thus, shellfish such as lobsters, oysters, shrimp, clams and crabs are all forbidden. Fish like tuna, carp, salmon and herring are all permitted.

Meat (the flesh of birds and mammals) cannot be eaten with dairy.

Grape products made by non-Jews may not be eaten.
(The restrictions on grape products derive from the laws against using products of idolatry.)

A kosher household will have at least two sets of pots, pans and dishes: one for meat and one for dairy

A very humane and almost painless slaughter
Ritual slaughter is known as shechitah, and the person who performs the slaughter is called a shochet, both from the Hebrew root Shin-Cheit-Tav, meaning to destroy or kill. The method of slaughter is a quick, deep stroke across the throat with a perfectly sharp blade with no nicks or unevenness. This method is painless, causes unconsciousness within two seconds, and is widely recognized as the most humane method of slaughter possible.

A little comical
An egg that contains a blood spot may not be eaten. This isn't very common, but I find them once in a while. It is a good idea to break an egg into a glass and check it before you put it into a heated pan, because if you put a blood-stained egg into a heated pan, the pan becomes non-kosher.

Kosher symbols on food packaging

The most controversial certification is the K, a plain letter K found on products asserted to be kosher. A letter of the alphabet cannot be trademarked, so any manufacturer can put a K on a product, even without any supervision at all. For example, Jell-O brand gelatin puts a K on its product, even though every reliable Orthodox authority agrees that Jell-O is not kosher.

. . .although observant Jews are only a small fragment of the marketplace, kosher certification is also relied upon by many Muslims
