News roundup - FAs push for higher wages and Tesla may be replaced in the Mag 7

CNBC: Pilots got their payday. Now flights attendants are pushing airlines for higher wages

Feb 13, 2024

Pilots at major carriers have won large raises, partly due to a shortage of aviators in the post-pandemic travel boom.

Flight attendants make an average of about $67,000 a year, according to the Labor Department, though pay can range from around $38,000 at the bottom 10th percentile to about $97,000 at the top.

Inflation has been “the most difficult for our new hires,” said Julie Hedrick, national president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents about 27,000 flight attendants at American. “We want [American] to come to the table and recognize what we’ve done to return this airline to profitability.”

Flight attendants for the most part are paid when the aircraft door is closed. Unions are largely pushing for either ground pay or boarding pay to compensate flight attendants for their work before takeoff.

You Don’t Need More How-To Advice — You Need a Beautiful and Painful Reckoning - Tim Erriss

Blog post from Tim Ferriss about not needing more how-to advice

People suck at following advice. Even the most effective people in the world are often terrible. There are at least two reasons:

1. Most people have an insufficient reason for action. The pain isn’t painful enough. It’s a nice-to-have, not a must-have. There has been no “Harajuku Moment.”

2. There are no reminders. No consistent tracking = no awareness = no behavioral change. Consistent tracking, even if you have no knowledge of fat-loss or exercise, will often beat advice from world-class trainers.

How to stop the iPhone side button from ending a phone call

If your calls keep dropping suddenly when you hear a click sound, it could mean that your iPhone has a default setting enabled to end calls when the side (right) button is pressed.

To change this setting, navigate to:

Settings > Accessibility > Touch

Enable the “Prevent Lock to End Call” setting.

This setting will stop the right hand side button on the iPhone from ending a call, which is a terribly enjoying feature and one setting that should be changed as soon as possible.

The amount of phone calls I had when the call ended abruptly by accidentally touching this button were too many to count.

Owning a Home in Bozeman is Extremely Expensive Now

How much does it cost to own a home in Bozeman?

Entry level condos start around $400,000 and those are mostly two bedroom units.

If you want a three bedroom condo, it’s going to cost closer to $500,000.

So how much is a monthly payment on a home in Bozeman?

During the pandemic, Bozeman (and Montana overall) saw a huge influx of people. Home prices in Bozeman doubled in around 3-4 years 2018/2019-2022.

A mortgage payment, taxes, and HOA will cost about $3,000/month for a $415,000 home with a down payment of 10% ($41,500). And that number does not include Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI).

You can use mortgage calculators online to understand how much your home payment could be at currrent interest rates. Don’t forget to estimate the taxes, insurance, and HOA dues. Dues for HOAs in Bozeman average about $200-300/month.

If you put less then 20% down on a home, the bank will add the PMI to your payment. PMI for a starter home in Bozeman could cost around $125-175 per month.

Owning a home since late 2020 became a lot more expensive than renting in Bozeman. Average rent is around $2,000-2,200 for a 2 bedroom unit and close to $3,000/month for a 3 bedroom unit.

What does it take to buy a home in Bozeman?

With extremely high home prices and higher interest rates (about 7.8% in late 2023), most people will need a six figure household income to afford even a starter house. If you have children, you’ll need a higher income to afford all your expenses.

If you don’t make a six figure income, you’ll need to have a large amount of cash available to either reduce your loan amount or buy down the interest rate.

Unfortunately, much of the middle class in Bozeman can no longer afford to buy homes, because the median income is about $50,000 lower than what’s required to affordably buy a starter home.

Sleep problems associated with ADHD

Associations of sleep disturbance with ADHD: implications for treatment

The most recent meta-analysis of subjective studies found that ADHD was associated with statistically significant greater impairments in six parent-reported subjective measures of sleep in children than in controls (Cortese et al. 2009). The largest standardized mean difference was observed for bedtime resistance, followed by difficulty with morning awakenings, sleep onset difficulties, sleep-disordered breathing, night awakenings and daytime sleepiness.

Other sleep problems reportedly associated with ADHD in children and/or adults include early and middle insomnia, nocturnal awakening, nocturnal activity, snoring, breathing difficulties, restless sleep, parasomnias, nightmares, daytime sleepiness, delayed sleep phase, short sleep time and anxiety around bedtime.
