The How and Why of Amazon's New Restricted Listing Program

As of September 15, 2014, Amazon started restricting the listing of most Blu-Ray and DVD titles.  They claim that they are starting this program to reduce fraudulent or inaccurate listings.  The main reason this can happen is when sellers knowingly or unknowingly list movie titles that are either not region coded to play in the United States/North America/South America, or they are similar, but not that exact same UPC/ASIN code. "We are implementing this restriction because these products may have a higher risk of authenticity issues." (Read the full article on Amazon Seller Central)

Houston, we have a problem...

I went to list several items, and they were restricted (meaning a seller must re-apply to sell these items).  They could avoid discouraging good sellers by automatically approving sellers with 100% feedback ratings.  I occasionally list DVDs, Blu-Rays, and video games from my private collection, or single items aquired from other collections that are in Very Good to New Condition.  These items had blocked pages where little information was given, except " Sorry, the ability to create a listing for this item is restricted." Let's do better next time Amazon.  The least they could have done was provide a link for this generic page letting sellers know about their new policy.  I had to go hunting for this page to find out the new restrictions for video products.

The following are items that I was not able to list, as of December 2014:
- Thor 2 Dark World (2-Disc 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray)
- Frozen [Blu-ray] - no link to list the item
- Yojimbo Criteron DVD - restricted item
- Lion King (2-disc Platinum Edition) - restricted item
- Howl's Moving Castle (no link to list the item)
- Spirited Away (no link to list the item)
- My Neighbor Totoro (no link to list the item)

From Amazon.com's Seller Help:
As part of our ongoing efforts to provide a great shopping experience, beginning September 15, 2014, sellers who have not sold any items in the Video, DVD, & Blu-ray category between September 6, 2013 and September 15, 2014 will be required to apply to sell in the category.

Additionally, sellers who have sold one or more items in the category between September 6, 2013 and September 15, 2014 will be required to apply to sell DVDs with Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) of $25 or greater. All sellers in this group may continue to list DVDs with MSRPs below $25 and Blu-rays at any MSRP without further action.
source: Amazon Seller Central

Suggested Retail Price Clause

Almost every recent blu-ray release is going to have an MSRP of $25 or greater.  This means that unless you want to list bargain-bin DVDs and Blu-Rays, you're going to have to reapply to list almost any recent movie title.

Bad for Small/Micro sized, Legitimate Home Based Sellers

Most of the minimum seller requirements are perfect because they block-out bad or deceptive sellers.  The only problem is that Amazon has added a premium account requirement just to sell movies, which crosses the line; because it prevents small, home-based businesses who occasionally sell privately owned items if they don't want to shell out cash for a professional account.
"If you do not have a Professional seller account, you must agree to upgrade to a Professional selling plan within 30 days after your application is approved" [Read more at the Amazon Seller Central article]

Discouraging at first, but eventually helpful for people who sell on Amazon for living.

For reputable sellers this is going to benefit their business and avoid competitors trying to sell knock-offs or items that are not exactly matching the movie title listing.  Where this really benefits the consumer is when buying products like cell phones that need to match the correct product.

If I want to buy a used iPhone 5 on Amazon and someone ships me anything else, it would really discourage me from purchasing used cell phones on Amazon unless I feel very comfortable purchasing from a seller than has an extremely high feedback rating and gives a detailed enough description of the product that I know they are inspecting items individually before listing them.

Selling Your DVDs and Blu-Rays Elsewhere

If you already sell on eBay, it's pretty simple to start listing items on Half.com, which is the main competitor to Amazon's used marketplace.  Since Amazon is restricting the sale of Thor: The Dark World on Blu-Ray, I will probably list my copy on Half.com

How do you feel about Amazon's new policy?

Could they improve the page that says an item is "restricted"?

Will their new policy help or hinder your selling on Amazon?

Buying Guardians of the Galaxy VUDU and iTunes Digital code

If you don't want to shell out $15-20 to buy the Blu-Ray disc of Guardians of the Galaxy, here are some stores that are offering the Digital HD code. This is redeemable at either VUDU, iTunes, or Amazon Instant Video.  Some stores only provide the VUDU code option, so read the description carefully.

Best Deal
FastFlicks.tictail.com - $7.00

Uvsale.tictail.com - $7.75

UVUltraviolet.tictail.com - $8.00

MovieLovers.tictail.com - $7.95 (may not redeem on VUDU)

Uvcollector.tictail.com - $8.50

More options to find the digital copy code:

The Movie Pawn Shop - $9.99
HappyWatching.com - OUT OF STOCK, $6.50

The Digital HD code is going for $8-10 on eBay (sold auctions)
Best to search for 'guardians galaxy code', because some sellers are listing the code with various descriptions.

---

What service is best to redeem Digital HD codes?
VUDU is the most widespread and ubiquitous service available now and probably the best way to redeem your digital HD code.  Their app comes pre-loaded on almost every blu-ray player made in the last four years and you can use any Android or iOS tablet or phone to watch your movie.  I redeem all my digital copies on VUDU whenever possible.  VUDU also allows you to share your ultraviolet-enabled movies with a few other people.

I do not recommend redeeming your movie on the iTunes Store, because you can only watch your movie on an Apple device ( iPad, iPhone, Apple TV)  or a computer with iTunes. They lock you into using Apple products and don't provide enough flexibility to watch your movie if you're not at your own home with your devices.  If you go to a friend's house to watch the movie, good luck if they actually have something that can play it on the TV.

Avoid listings with only DMA/DMR
Be careful about buying codes that do not specifically list that you are buying a VUDU or Digital HD redeemable code.  DMA will not redeem on VUDU and you may have just dropped money on a code that you cannot watch on your Blu-Ray player or other media players with the VUDU app.

Ultraviolet Code Store Comparison | Buy UltraViolet Codes instead of expensive rentals

In May 2014 I wrote a list of some popular Ultraviolet Code stores, but the list is now somewhat outdated and included sites that are regularly unavailable.

This newly compiled list is the most up-to-date and comprehensive list of sources to get a wide selection of Ultraviolet codes at reasonable prices.

Click on the image below to view at full-size for easier reading.  At some point, I'll try to make this list in text/HTML with links.

UVgrab.com, MovieLovers.tictail.com, and WatchTheWolf.tictail.com currently have the largest selection of HD Ultraviolet codes to purchase.  Most of the sites that average a mere $3-4 for HD codes have only a very limited selection, or may only have some of the junk movies that movie buffs are not interested in purchasing.

The list is sorted by a combination of selection and price of the movie codes offered by each store.  I don't think it's worth buying SD, low-quality codes, so I've only included stores that have a significant number of HD codes.

What criteria were used to create this list of stores?
  • Price - stores that averaged $7 or more for HD codes were passed over because they are overpriced in the Ultraviolet market today.
  • Selection - stores with reasonably sized collections were included.
  • HD availability - stores without HD codes available were not considered.  In the long run, would you really want to spend money on digital copies that will look pixelated and trashy on your big screen TV?
  • Accessible - some stores were omitted from this list because they were offline as of this writing (Sept 24, 2014)
Several groups on Google Plus have also appeared where Ultraviolet codes can be bought, traded, and sold.

Unity Church's spiritual philosophy

Five Basic Principles of Unity
  1. God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power. God is good and present everywhere.
  2. We are spiritual beings, created in God’s image. The spirit of God lives within each person; therefore, all people are inherently good.
  3. We create our life experiences through our way of thinking.
  4. There is power in affirmative prayer, which we believe increases our awareness of God.
  5. Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.

God

God is Spirit, the loving source of all that is. God is the one power, all good, everywhere present, all wisdom. God is divine energy, continually creating, expressing and sustaining all creation. In God, we live and move and have our being. In Unity, some other ways we speak of God are Life, Light, Love, Substance, Principle, Law and Universal Mind.

The Nature of Humankind

We are each individual, eternal expressions of God. Our essential nature is divine and therefore inherently good. Our purpose is to express our divine potential as realized and demonstrated by Jesus and other master teachers. The more we awaken to our divine nature, the more fully God expresses in and through our lives.

Our Teachings

  • Heaven is not a place, but a state of consciousness; we create our own heaven and hell here and now.
  • We all have an innate capacity to know God through direct experience.
  • The “Christ” is that part of God that is in every person. There is a spark of divinity within all people, just as there was in Jesus.
  • Prayer works.
  • We are here to set a positive example and be a role model for others.
  • We are here to make the world a better place.

Jesus

We believe that Jesus expressed his divine potential and sought to show humankind how to express ours as well. We see Jesus as a master teacher of universal truths and as our Way Shower. In Unity, we use the term Christ to mean the divinity in humankind. Jesus is the great example of the Christ in expression.

Prayer and Meditation

Affirmative prayer is the highest form of creative thought. It includes the release of counterproductive, negative thoughts, as well as holding in mind statements of spiritual truth. Through meditation, we experience the presence of God. Prayer and meditation heighten our awareness and thereby transform our lives.

Buy Cheap Ultraviolet Codes Instead of Renting

Online movie rentals are expensive now.  New releases from most major online retailers (Amazon, VUDU, and iTunes) cost a whopping $4 for standard quality and $5-6 for HD.

Along comes a better alternative.  Pay just $4-6 for most titles to add the movie to your digital collection, rather than renting, where you only get to see it once.  Several websites have cropped up selling Ultraviolet codes that let you own the movie forever, and stream it blu-ray players, gaming consoles, and any tablet or portable device that supports VUDU or Flixster.

I love supporting my local independent video store, and I'm definitely not advocating abandoning yours in favor of supporting the websites below. Instead of supporting inflated digital rental prices, buy an Ultraviolet code that allows you to own the movie forever.  If you like a movie, but don't want to pay $10-20 to own it on Blu-Ray, Ultraviolet is the most versatile option right now.

Current Digital Movie Deals on New Releases:

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 [DIGITAL HD/ DMA/ VUDU/ ITUNES] $6.99
Less than 10 codes remaining

 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story [DIGITAL HD/ DMA/ VUDU/ ITUNES] $7.99
Less than 5 codes in stock.

How to Share a Facebook Page Post with Your Friends

This tutorial only works if you are using Facebook as you and not as the Facebook page of your business.

Step 1: Type the name of your Facebook page into the search bar at the top of Facebook, then click on your page that appears.

Step 2:  Find the post you want to share, then click on the "Share" link at the bottom.

Step 3:  A little window will pop-up.  Make sure the "On Your Own Timeline" button does not show the name of your page near it.  If it does, this means you are using Facebook as your page and not as You.  Click on the "Share Photo" button to share the post on your wall so all of your friends can see it.

Tip:  Even more people will see your post if you tag yourself in the post.  This means tagging yourself in the photo.  Anywhere will do, you can even tag an empty area in the corner, as Facebook does not require a face to be tagged.

How to Setup Samsung ML-2010 printer in Mavericks

As of December 12th, 2013, Apple does not support the Samsung ML-2010 printer in OS X Mavericks.  You can print, however, using Parallels Desktop 8 or 9, see the solution at the bottom of this post.

Apple released this package on their website on November 14, 2013: Samsung Printer Drivers v2.6 for OS X, but the Samsung ML-2010 is unfortunately not included in this list of printers.

The Samsung ML-2010 worked perfectly in Leopard and Snow Leopard, but a driver is not available for Mavericks.

Upon checking the Samsung website. they offer a mac driver for the ML-2010, but it's only compatible up through OS X Lion (10.7).

When I tried to download this mac driver and install it, an alert message popped up saying "Samsung SPL2 Installer.app" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.  Oh well, Apple and/or Samsung tied some knots here.

So I thought I was stuck and that my Samsung ML-2010 printer was now incompatible since I had upgraded to Mavericks.

I remembered that I had Parallels Desktop on my mac, which can use Windows compatible peripherals.  Parallels Desktop 9 works on Mavericks and I was able to print from it after installing the "universal Samsung driver" on my virtual Windows XP machine from their support page for the Samsung ML-2010 printer.

It stinks that the ML-2010 printer is not natively supported in Mavericks right now, but maybe someday Samsung will release a new driver. Until then, just remember that Mavericks was free and that most OS X upgrades are $20-30 depending on when they are purchased. Parallels 8 is available for $20, so Apple's freebie offsets the $20 you will have to spend to use an old Samsung printer if you don't already have Parallels.

Parallels Desktop 9 is available on Amazon for $60, or you can get Parallels Desktop 8 for just $20 and the virtual Windows machines will still run in Mavericks, according to the Parallels blog.

If you buy Parallels Desktop 9 in a retail store, it costs $80.
