News roundup - FAs push for higher wages and Tesla may be replaced in the Mag 7

CNBC: Pilots got their payday. Now flights attendants are pushing airlines for higher wages

Feb 13, 2024

Pilots at major carriers have won large raises, partly due to a shortage of aviators in the post-pandemic travel boom.

Flight attendants make an average of about $67,000 a year, according to the Labor Department, though pay can range from around $38,000 at the bottom 10th percentile to about $97,000 at the top.

Inflation has been “the most difficult for our new hires,” said Julie Hedrick, national president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents about 27,000 flight attendants at American. “We want [American] to come to the table and recognize what we’ve done to return this airline to profitability.”

Flight attendants for the most part are paid when the aircraft door is closed. Unions are largely pushing for either ground pay or boarding pay to compensate flight attendants for their work before takeoff.

WispXtreme Plans blow Cable Internet Speeds out of the Water for the Price

Spectrum (one of the only fast internet providers) in southwest Montana just raised my monthly bill from $50/month to $65/month without alerting me. This is a pretty poor business practice and they are known across the country for flexing their monopoly in some local markets.

For people who live in qualifying areas (Livingston, Wilsall, and Clyde Park), WispWest in Livingston, Montana has insanely fast internet speeds that are much cheaper than using to local monopoly (Spectrum). See all of the WispXtreme plans here

If you need fast upload speeds because you like to live stream, upload videos, or regularly backup your photos/videos/computer system to the cloud their upload speeds are absolutely insane!

They offer a residential plan for $60.77/mo for 100 Mbps upload speed, while Spectrum charges $65+/month after your first year promotion expires, and their upload speeds are a severely throttled 10 Mbps.

The only potential catch I see is that you must rent their router equipment for $10/month, which actually increases the lowest cost to $70.77/mo. The upload speeds still are completely insane for the price! You have to pay more for Spectrum's premium speed plan to get 20 Mbps upload speed.

Kappa Oie Music - Missoula Musician

Kappa Oie released an Album in 2011 called Love, Loss & Happy Thoughts. On that album, I loved the songs "Pretty Little Book" and "Love You Lately". There was a joy, sincerity, and hope captured in those songs that I really appreciated in my 20s and even into my 30s. Link to the album on Spotify and Bandcamp.

Montana Covid Cases Explode in August 2021

New Covid cases in Montana surpassed 700 per day, with a 7 day average of 471 on August 27, 2021.

These are the highest levels since early January, where Jan 8th saw 820 new cases and 776 new cases on Jan 5th.

The growth seen in the current wave mirrors the growth during the 2020 winter climb when cases hit 712 daily and a 7-day average of 471 on October 8th.

Governor Gianforte is one of the few governors that made it illegal for employers to require vaccinations in Montana, with the exception of health care.

The mask mandate has not been reinstated and very few people are wearing masks, even as stores ask the unvaccinated shoppers to mask up.

Missoula promoter plans 1,500-capacity venue in Bozeman | Business | bozemandailychronicle.com
May 23, 2018
The venue will fill a niche between the city’s existing spots, Checota said. For comparison, the recently reopened Rialto Theater holds 450 at full capacity, while the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse can hold around 8,000.

Checota’s group sold more than 150,000 tickets at more than 120 shows between its three Missoula venues last year. The owner said he hopes to bring at least 80 shows to Bozeman once the theater is up and running — an eclectic collection of artists similar to Logjam’s Missoula offerings.
And like his previous ventures, Checota said he hopes the Bozeman venue will act as an “anchor” that other businesses can build around.
“For us, we feel one of the key elements to preserving a community is the local arts scene,” he said. “My anticipation is this will just hit the ground running.”

Folkvord, along with his wife Hope and daughters Hillary and Haylee, plans to keep the motor motel feel of the Rainbow, but convert it into a more boutique-style lodging in keeping with the Seventh Avenue renewal project.
