Lightweight image gallery is a well-designed, clean, javascript-based image gallery with rows of thumbnails on the left and images appearing on the right. A tiny border appears around the active thumbnails. Details of the gallery. TOP PICK.
Imago image gallery is essentially an AJAX based SimpleViewer clone. This looks like it could be a winner. The developer says: Jens developed Imago because he needed a gallery to display some photos. And badly there wasn't any gallery out there that satisfied his needs.
Image Thumbnail Viewer II on DynamicDrive is a simple, clean, excellent viewer. I need to determine test how 8, 10, or 20 thumbnails would display. Otherwise, this is the type of viewer I'm looking to use. This is an excellent image viewer for portfolio sites. Caveat: this little bit of code has to go in every link tag rel="enlargeimage::mouseover.
Slideviewer (jQuery) uses simple numbering at the bottom for navigation, no thumbnails, but could be a good alternative to Soundslides for a blog. It can handle vertical images, but the developer recommends using the same image width/height.
JonDesign's Smoothgallery is excellent, except for the arrows displaying over the images. This should only happen on hover. Thumbnails are well done. Should be at least 50% larger, but I'm sure the size can be customized.
CSS based image gallery with full size images displaying below on hover.
Comments: needs a fade in, feels jerky without a fade-in.
Want to find something like this gallery, but with only the thumbnails and the large image, nothing else.
A List Apart: Javascript text links to display images. Details how to code text links to show images on a page.

Simple Controls Gallery (DynamicDrive) is an easy clean way to have an automatic slideshow of images, or manually move through images. All images should be the exact same dimensions. The fade-in between images is beautiful.
FrogJS gallery (DynamicDrive). This is a simple, easy to use gallery that shows a large image with two thumbnails, one on the left and one on the right. I used this for the Advanced Digital Photography self-portrait assignment.
