Frequency ranges of the human voice

Average range of frequencies for men, women, and children

The average man’s speaking voice, for example, typically has a fundamental frequency between 85 Hz and 155 Hz. A woman’s speech range is about 165 Hz to 255 Hz, and a child’s voice typically ranges from 250 Hz to 300 Hz and higher.

Of course, each of us has a wider range of sounds that our vocal cords can produce, and if we choose to sing, that range can extend up to four octaves. To help you visualize that, a standard piano keyboard has 88 black and white keys, and covers a frequency range from 27.5 Hz to 4186 Hz, over seven musical octaves (“middle C” is at 261 Hz). One octave represents 12 tones, white and black keys included.

We hear the frequency of speech or singing as the pitch, and a doubling of the fundamental frequency represents an octave. If you were singing a note at 100 Hz and then sang it at 200 Hz, you’d hear it as “twice as high.” If you sang a note at 180 Hz and then tried for a really low note, at 90 Hz, the latter would be an octave deeper.

But what’s surprising in all this is that the entire range of men’s and women’s voices remains between about 65 Hz for a male with a very deep bass voice to the highest note of a female coloratura soprano, just above 1,000 Hz, at 1,280 Hz. (A female high-pitched scream can go quite a bit higher, to around 3,000 Hz.)

According to these charts, the loudest frequencies for men are from about 125-750 Hz.

For women, it's about 180-1,800 Hz.

Women have a small peak around 4,000 Hz for normal speaking voices.

How to view MP3 file bitrate in Mac OS

MP3 Info 2.0 for Mac OS (donationware) "Your Song Library Companion" I'm running 10.9 Mavericks and I cannot view the bitrate and song tags for MP3 files from the Finder, but this little app solves the problem. All other important tags of the song are displayed throughout the window in several groups, here are duration and bitrate, and here the song title, artist, album, track number. Also, the composer, year, genre, comment, and encoder application are shown here, all in one nice window! Sometimes, the name of a song file isnt really revealing about its content. Wouldnt it be nice to have an easy way to rename the song file decently? Yes, that would be nice, and MP3-Info can help you with that. Select one of several possible name schemes, and the file will get a new name with just one click. That was simple indeed.

Recording Tapes with Audacity

Transferring tapes and records to computer or CD - Audacity Wiki

You can also connect to the headphones out jack of an integrated cassette deck or to that of an amplifier connected to the tape deck. If you do this (or if the "line-out" volume of your deck is adjustable), it's best to set that level quite close to its maximum, and adjust the recording level using Audacity's input volume slider (see below). This helps keep the inherent tape noise to a minimum in the signal sent to Audacity.

* Set the Correct input source settings
* Adjust volume level on the tape deck to be close to the maximum
* Adjust Audacity's recording level
* Set recording to 2 Channels (Aduio I/O tab of preferences)
On Windows XP or earlier or Linux systems, select line-in as the recording source on Audacity's Mixer Toolbar dropdown input selector:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/onlinehelp-1.2/toolbar_mixer.htm .

When recording, stay on the same track by using the pause button.

Export Multiple command
The File > Export Multiple command will export all your audio files at one go (one per LP track, each with its own filename), based on your chosen split points. When you click File > Export Multiple, a dialogue box pops up where you choose your Export Format, the Export Location, and how to name your files.

To record in stereo, open the Audacity preferences. In the “Audio I/O” section, change the number of recording channels from 1 (mono) to 2 (stereo).
